Excellence has been our passion from day one. Our Global Centre for education excellence ensures that all GIIS schools achieve global standards in education and prepare to be benchmarked against the best schools in the world. Our excellence initiative is guided by the Malcolm Baldrige excellence criteria.
Just 2 months back, for the first time, an Indian student, and that too from GIIS Singapore, Ms. Apoorva Sachdeva, topped the worldwide exams of International Baccalaureate with a 100% score, and she achieved a perfect 100% score in university entrance exams and SAT as well. She has made all Indians and GIISians proud with this Olympian feat.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam during his previous visit to GIIS in 2006, had sparked in us, a thought of GIVING BACK TO THE SOCIETY. The following are some of the key programmes we have initiated since then.
Every Saturday, our cultural centres apart from imparting cultural education, teach YOGA to over 200 Singaporeans, mostly Chinese, from all walks of life. From MNC Directors to Taxi drivers to even cleaners, people come under one roof and learn Yoga absolutely FREE. This has brought all Singaporeans and Indian expatriates closer, culturally as well as socially.
In Singapore, there are quite a few poor people living in HDB flats and who do not have any money to buy basic food. Every year, the Global Indian Foundation provides these poor people with rice, wheat, sugar, oil etc to help them meet their basic needs.
The GIIS Scholarship fund was set up this year to assist those who could not afford CBSE education in Singapore. This year alone, we have extended assistance to over 66 students. Together with the Indian corporate firms here, we plan to grow this scholarship fund to provide enhanced scholarships and assistance to over 100 needy children in Singapore.
In Aug 2007, we launched the FLIP A GENERATION project for tribal students,in association with the Gujarat government. We started the Mahatma Gandhi EKLAVYA Tribal school in a tribal area, 65 kms from Baroda, home to 240 tribal boys and girls who are receiving the same standards of education as in our Singapore schools. They are also learning farming on an adjacent 10 acre land.
All this would not have been possible without the enlightening vision given by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in 2006. We are forever thankful to Prof. MGK Menon, our President, for his remarkable leadership and knowledge, Justice C.S. Dharmadhikari for invaluable Value systems & Gandhian thoughts, Mr. Chandu Borde for sporting spirit, Dr. Abid Hussain for his cohesive social ideas and inspiration and motivation from many eminent members of the Global Indian Foundation, without whom, this Foundation could never have grown.
The GIIS Schools have also brought all expatriate Indians together as GLOBAL INDIANS.
